1. Information We Collect

When you use Etyde, we collect the following types of information:

  • Account information: Your email address, display name, and role (teacher or student) when you create an account.
  • Practice session data: Duration, timestamps, notes, and progress for each practice session you complete.
  • Uploaded files: Sheet music, Guitar Pro files, MIDI files, audio recordings, and other music-related files you upload to the platform.
  • Usage analytics: Anonymous, aggregated usage data collected via our self-hosted Umami analytics instance. This includes page views and general usage patterns. No personal identifiers are tracked.
  • Messages: Content of messages exchanged between teachers and students within the platform.
  • Lesson and practice plan data: Lessons created by teachers, practice plans, goals, repertoire items, and reflections.

2. How We Use Your Data

  • Providing the service: Your data is used to deliver the core features of Etyde, including practice tracking, lesson management, teacher-student communication, and progress reporting.
  • Aggregated statistics: We may display anonymous, aggregated platform statistics on our landing page (such as total practice hours across all users or number of active teachers). These statistics never identify individual users.
  • Notifications: We send email notifications for messages, practice reminders, and lesson-related updates based on your notification preferences.

3. Data Storage and Security

Etyde is built on self-hosted infrastructure. Your data is stored on servers that we control, not on third-party cloud platforms. Our infrastructure includes:

  • A self-hosted PostgreSQL database for account data, practice sessions, lessons, and messages.
  • S3-compatible object storage (MinIO) for uploaded files such as sheet music and recordings.
  • A self-hosted Supabase instance for authentication and real-time features.

All connections are encrypted via TLS. Access to infrastructure is restricted to authorized administrators.

4. Third-Party Services

We use a limited number of third-party services:

  • Email delivery: Transactional emails (magic links, notifications) are sent via an SMTP provider.
  • Error tracking: We use a self-hosted error tracking service to monitor application errors and improve reliability. Error reports may include technical context but not personal content.

5. Data Retention and Deletion

You can delete your account at any time from your account settings. When you delete your account:

  • Your profile, practice sessions, uploaded files, messages, and all associated data are permanently removed.
  • Deletion is confirmed by typing the phrase "DELETE MY ACCOUNT" to prevent accidental deletion.
  • Aggregated, anonymous statistics (such as total platform practice hours) are not affected by individual account deletion.

6. Cookies

Etyde uses a minimal number of cookies strictly necessary for the service to function:

  • Session cookies: Used to authenticate your login session. These are required for the application to work.
  • Theme preference: A local storage entry (not a cookie) remembers your light/dark mode preference.

We do not use advertising cookies, tracking pixels, or third-party analytics cookies.

7. Children's Privacy

Etyde is designed for music teachers and their students of all ages. If a student is under the age of 16, we require that their teacher or parent/guardian has provided consent for the student to use the platform. Teachers who invite minor students are responsible for ensuring appropriate parental consent has been obtained. If you believe a minor is using the platform without appropriate consent, please contact us.
